The video codec is what compresses its data for storage. If you transcode to a codec that provides better compression, you can easily reduce the file size of the video without affecting its quality. That can be a bit difficult, which is why it is easier to simply convert your video to H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) if it isn’t already in either of those formats. The H.265 codec will provide better compression that can reduce the file size by up to 50% of a H.264 video; but isn’t as widely supported.

On the other hand H.264 is a safe option that can be played on practically any device – and will provide decent compression in its own right.

 

Reduce the video bitrate

The video bitrate is a setting that controls the amount of data the video uses each second for playback. By reducing it you will be able to directly reduce the file size of the video. If you do reduce the video bitrate however, the quality of the video will be affected and will start to deteriorate. As such it is best to reduce the bitrate gradually, and watch for compression artifacts as you do.

The bitrate that the video requires will be based on its codec, resolution, and frame rate. That being said there are other factors at play too, and the content of some videos may not need as high a video bitrate as others.

Both the video codec and its bitrate play a pivotal role in the file size, and where can i order adjusting them is the best way to reduce the file size of your videos. However in order to make the changes that you need you will require a video converter.

Ideally the video converter you use will let you select from a wide range of formats and adjust the video bitrate and other parameters. That being said in some cases you may just want to convert the video to MP4 with H.264, in which case an easier tool such as Online Video Converter may suffice.

All said and done it is up to you to determine which option is best for your video. In some cases you may even want to use both in order to reduce the file size as much as possible, while affecting its quality as little as possible.
